I Like Them Apples
One of my favourite snacks is apples and cheese. This time of year, I like the Honey Crisps best, with a little piece of old cheddar on the side. And I like apple slices better than just munching on the whole thing at once. The skins don’t get stuck between my teeth, it gives me better control over my apple/cheese per bite ratio and I usually eat them more slowly so it stretches out my snack time.
I got a new apple corer-slicer a few weeks ago, I broke my last one, and it occurred to me that I didn’t eat nearly as many when I had to get out a knife and actually do the cutting myself. (Yeah, I’m really this lazy.) As much as I hate to admit it, convenience is a pretty big factor in most of my decision-making and it could just be my gadget addiction talking, but for some reason that little wee bit of time-saving made choosing the fruit over some kind of junk-food that much easier.
Although this train of thought seems to validate the, “Healthy eating takes up too much time” argument, it got me to thinking about all of the things I’ve started doing over the years to make healthier eating more accessible. Like keeping pre-cut and washed veggie sticks in the fridge for grab n’ go snacks. Making sure I actually have some of those veggies or something small before I go for groceries*. Freezing leftovers into their own little TV dinner style containers for future suppers. Keeping the fresh fruit in plain sight and the junk food on high shelves, behind closed cabinet doors and of course, buying unnecessary, but amusing gadgets to keep me entertained throughout the whole process.
