The Grateful Undead

It’s been a little over three weeks since my last comic post. That plague I picked up just before Christmas turned into a pretty unpleasant bout of Pneumonia. I’m only starting to clear the fog out of my head and get my energy back a bit. It will still be a few weeks before I’m back to the gym so I hope nobody minds that there will likely be less exercise-comics (or at least high-energy ones) until then.

The timing on this hiatus couldn’t possibly have been worse for a comic like Promise Promises. New Year’s resolutions are huge inspiration for my kind of content. On the up side though, I just read that the third week of January is when most people start slipping off the resolution wagon so here’s hoping we can all jump back on it with a bit of humour together.

I wanted to say another big thank-you to Brian, Denver and Ted for helping me out with the guest comics. You guys clearly put a lot of time and effort into those and I really appreciate it. It was a huge relief to me that the site wasn’t down completely and I hope I can return the favour some day.

I also have to give a shout out to the staff, especially the nurses at University Hospital here in London. They were amazing, I honestly don’t know how they do those jobs let alone keep it together so well. There were people in the ER when I checked in that I would have smacked and sent home for being mean, rude or just hypochondriacs. One guy beside me was blasting this poor doctor because he couldn’t do anything about a tooth ache. Tooth ache? Dude went to emergency with a tooth ache? How about I punch you in the mouth then you can go see a dentist? Jerk. But, not to dwell on the negative, they took excellent care of me and I’m grateful for their help.

Oh! Incidentally, that switching hands while snacking thing I wrote about in today’s comic actually works.

Guest Strip – Ted Heeley

I know the best people!

With enormous thanks to my buddy Ted Heeley, we have a Friday guest strip!

I’ve mentioned Ted here before, he’s a sculptor, designer and illustrator who’s basically been looking out for me since…2002 (Wow! Time flies).

One of Ted’s many talents is comedy and storytelling, I’ve been nudging him to produce a webcomic for years but he’s all busy doing things like pilots for TV shows he’s developed, building the Toronto Santa Clause Parade and international political figures for the G20. He’s one of the two most amazing people I know, the other being his wife – the real life inspiration for the Baroness.

Thanks so much Ted!

Makeshift Miracle

There’s a new banner on the Links page for my friend Zub’s online graphic novel, Makeshift Miracle. He’s doing an update of a story he posted years ago, actually it was one of the first long-form comics to be completed online. I don’t know if he still has the original posted anywhere but if you get a chance to check out this new one, it’s really pretty. They’ve gone to a completely different art style that’s kinda dreamy and really suits it.

Graphic novels online are at a bit of a disadvantage because it can be hard to get into the meat of a story when you can only read two pages a week, but this one has three chapters in the archives so there’s a nice bit of reading to get hooked on.

From Shapeless Blog: http://choochoobear.tumblr.com/

Once again it looks like someone is trying to set a new low in internet douche-baggery.

If you’re not familiar with scrapers, they’re apps or pages that help themselves to a site’s content and re-posts it without permission, credit or even a link to the original work. There are more than one of these scraper-apps for webcomics and now, joy of joys, they’re on facebook too.

This one being particularly sinister in that it solicits donations claiming to “help improve” or “keep alive” the site they’re plagiarizing. (Note the red circle in the photo above, from the Shapeless blog.) Please don’t think for a minute that the cartoonist is going to see one red cent of that donation.

If you want to support your favourite comics (which is always appreciated), buy a book, print or something from their store. Some sites do post a donation button, but it’s usually exclusive to that site and if you’re unsure you can contact any of us for confirmation before donating.

I am not opposed to collecting donations for content, but I don’t do it personally (I like to save my mooching for things like Movember or whatever other cause du jour). So if you happen to find an app or page with Promises Promises content asking for anything, please let me know directly and don’t give them your money.

Guest Strip – Denver Brubaker

I can’t express how tickled I am to receive today’s guest strip!

This very clever piece was done by my friend Denver over at Tales of a Checkered Man. I love the character in the brown paper effect and the little neck tie! I may have to make Fats Jokes a part of the regular continuity when I’m back to regular posting… I should also come up with a proper name for that little guy, I refer to him as “Domino” to myself but haven’t decided if that should stick. He’s surprisingly popular.

But, if you’re looking for a good laugh combined with intrigue and a slick drawing style, check out Tales of a Checkered Man here:

Thanks so much Denver!
