To-Do(s)and Don’t(s)

by Jules on October 7, 2010 at 4:18 pm

Got to running down my list of To-Do(s) for the long weekend. This one’s a big deal in our household, it’s Thanksgiving plus three birthdays. Lots of family, lots of food. This is my year to host. I like hosting family dinners, I like to cook and if I’m not into the conversation I can busy myself rather than rudely tuning out some body’s play by play of local sports or baby-diaper situations. (Smile and nod only gets you so far.)

Also, with the new house it’s a bit of a warming party…Well, it would be except we had a little drama. (What’s a holiday without a little drama?) We discovered a hole in the roof. By we I mean “He” actually discovered the hole in the roof, my half of we just noticed it’s been raining in here. Not to be boxed-in by conventional inspection practices, like say…looking at the roof, my sweetie went through a couple of walls and up, to find the hole.

hole in the roof

Which is not a criticism, he found the problem and thanks to one of my friends/clients the hole has been fixed and the stairwell will make for dinner conversation, I’m sure.

Back to my original point, the roofing drama plus a couple of client quick-fixes torpedoed my “no shopping after Wednesday before a long weekend” rule. Thankfully, my Dad picked up the turkey from the farmer’s market today but that means tomorrow I have to do the rest of the groceries.  I can’t possibly be the only person terrorized by holiday shopping. Personally, if it comes down to getting tackled by an elderly woman, (don’t be fooled, those elbows are sharp) for thirty cents off a bunch of asparagus or planning ahead and paying the extra buck for sanity and cart space, I’ll spend the extra buck! This is also why I’m a big fan of online shopping.

Not this year. This year I will officially be one of those jerks in the mall. Hot coat, stuffed cart and bumping into other people because I’m crossing things off my list(s) instead of watching where I’m going. Then, after forty five minutes in line and some snotty remark from an over-worked cashier, I’ll trundle out to the car, get in and remember that one thing that will make or break the entire day that I forgot and have to go back in while the ice cream melts in the trunk. Awesome.

It’ll be worth it in the end, we always have a good time. But part of me wonders if they’d notice if I booked a flight to Aruba and just left a post-it marked “cook me” on the turkey?

The learning curve

This weekend I started a little fall site-clean up. Big thanks to Matt over at Robot Beach for the tutorial. I now have the snazzy new contact buttons on the right sidebar! YAY! Somewhere in the process I mucked up my code so the sidebars are all stunted like that, and if anybody knows how to fix it, please drop me a line. The learning curve on HTML code is uphill…and sandy. But, never to be defeated, I have figured out some other fun stuff, I’m working on my own navigation buttons and there will be bragging when I get that figured out. OH! and I found out that by adding the contact buttons and taking out the Flash Facebook and Twitter feeds, I can now see the comics on my Blackberry again. HA! (I’m actually really embarrassed to admit how long it took me to find out that was the problem.)

In keeping with the theme of trying something new I found this today: Comics Go Pink. What a great idea. A show of awareness backed by a pretty generous fund-raiser. This weekend is Canadian Thanksgiving so I don’t know if I’ll have time to scratch together a little something extra-special for Sunday, but I’m going to make the effort. I’m not fund-raising for it, but I do think it’s important, (and fun) to back stuff like this.

Weekend Weigh-In!

week14

Another 1.8lbs down was a really nice surprise. As I mentioned last week, I was thinking I’d have a bit of gain this week. One of my favourite diet-misunderstandings is that muscle is heavier that fat. Muscle is denser than fat but usually the initial gain when jumping back into activity after a lull is a bit of water retention.

Usually I do a what worked – what needs work theme on these posts but I’ve had a couple of conversations with friends this week who were getting into new fall sports or starting new classes and I want to talk a bit about picking a gym or activity that works for you.

Since I was in college I’ve been a member at one gym or another. I like the freedom to come and go as my schedule allows, the variety of equipment and classes, (so I don’t get bored) and I like that there is always someone around to ask if I need pointers or want help. Also, a steady monthly fee is easy for me to work into my budget. Some sports are cheaper but getting slammed with the full fees and equipment expenses once or twice a year can be inconvenient if my car happens to be acting up at the same time.

Everyone is different and has different fitness/activity needs, however there are a few common factors across the board worth addressing.

Convenience, is probably a good place to start. Personally, I can validate just about any excuse to weasel out of a work out, so this is a big one for me. Whatever you decide to take on, it has to be easy to get to and from, fit into your work/life schedule and budget. When we moved, I had planned on staying with my old gym. They have franchises all over the country, their rates are reasonable and I liked the people. When we got here, the nearest location to my house wasn’t far but it was a pain to get to because of all the road construction that took over the province this year. So I had a look at another gym closer to my house and I’m really glad I did. They gave me a better monthly rate, had a bigger facility with a wider variety of classes, more times during the day and a pool! So no matter what, I can get there any time for almost any activity I want. The only disadvantage was that it’s a smaller franchise so if I’m out of town I can’t just drop into another location. (But let’s face it, if I’m on vacation odds are I’ll be found face-down at a buffet rather than at the gym anyway, so it wasn’t a deal breaker.) I have a friend who practically lives on her bike. It’s not only exercise, it’s her mode of transportation which makes it a great fit. I know other people who take Spinning, Yoga or Tai Chi classes because having a specific time slot booked every week allows them to schedule busy lives around activity. Some of the guys I used to work with simply hooked up at lunch hour for shinny hockey or touch football.

Interest is another big card in the deck. I have the attention span of a caffeinated humming bird so variety is a big player for me but so are milestones. I spent most of this year working up to doing the 10km run so I had something to focus on during endless hours on the treadmill. Now that I don’t have that goal, I have about fifteen minutes before “bored now” kicks in and I’m not motivated to finish or push as hard as I could, so I’ve been taking classes. It’s a change of pace and new skills so the challenge keeps my interest. For some people it’s the game or commitment to the team that keeps them involved. For others it’s about getting outside, a little peace or stress release and sometimes you just wanna rock out so a new play list will do the trick. The mind is one of our biggest muscles and it really helps to keep it engaged.

Socialization is the last point. I’ve been very lucky when it comes to coaches, teachers and trainers. (Heck, I write comics about them!) I actually really miss the girls at my old gym, they were fun, motivational and communicated instructions very clearly. Other than the original Fiona and Trish the one who sticks out most in my mind was Claudia who did the body-combat class. I’ve tried a bunch since, and I like interval boxing, but I haven’t found a class that was as much fun and challenging as Claudia’s. The people at my new gym are great. Scott is the trainer who does my fitness assessments. He’s really nice, motivated and smiles A LOT. In fact, I may just start referring to him as Scott Smilesalot. Which is not a criticism, I appreciate the enthusiasm. There’s nothing worse than a lousy instructor, if you feel disrespected, condescension or left behind you’re in the wrong place with the wrong trainer and I say move on. Same thing goes with team sports or group activities. If you’re not in a group with complimentary personalities and boundaries, it’s no fun at all. Conversely, I’ve stuck it out in sports I don’t love just because the people were so much fun I’d look forward to the game all week.

The only other thing I can think of that requires factoring the same levels of  convenience, expense, interest and socialization, is picking where to go for beer and pizza after.

Running Behind

Wrapped up another Word On the Street Festival yesterday which officially marks the end of the 2010 convention season for me. Whew! Brian and I had a great show, it was awesome to meet everybody and I have to give a special shout out to Kevin, who we’ve met at a bunch of shows now and was a big help in the great spilled-Sprite crisis. Thanks for the hand Kevin!

Photos to come, but not many I’m sorry to say. I discovered my camera battery dead when I got to the show and only had my blackberry for photos. It’s not nearly as friendly.

Got home late last night and found a pile of client revisions in my inbox this morning marked NOW! NOW! NOW! And since they’re the ones holing the pay cheques, they got priority. So I didn’t get today’s comic finished. I’ll have it up tomorrow afternoon. Sorry about that.

Waaayyy!

There’s actually a bit of a real-life inspired story behind today’s comic.

My new gym has a smoothie bar and when you sign up for membership they give you a gift certificate to spend there. I have allergies so I’m usually pretty careful to check ingredients before ordering something I know nothing about, like the protein powder they put in the smoothies. There are a lot of whey-based protein powders and whey is a dairy byproduct which means lactose.

A couple of weeks ago I asked the girl behind the counter about the protein powder and she’s clearly a summer student or part-timer who’s just putting in the hours – not really interested in digging any deeper into her job than she really has to. (I really don’t begrudge that, we’ve all had those jobs. ) So, when I asked her about the whey content, she didn’t understand what I meant. There was a bit of a Who’s On First back and forth before I figured out that she thought I meant “way”. I’m a bit of an instigator by nature so I started messing with her, thinking she’d catch on and we’d have a laugh, but I ended up really frustrating the poor thing before I finally gave up and pointed to the “whey” on the label.

Oh wow, she was so disgusted. I got the full on stink-eye the way that only teenagers can give and I started to crack. In the end, I was trying so hard not to laugh I had to walk away without ordering.
