Weekend Inspiration

by Jules on November 7, 2009 at 12:56 pm

I was getting caught up on some of my favourite sites and blogs today and found this video linked to webcomics.com.  I love that site, I think it’s a terrific resource.  I’m posting it here, because I think John Cleese is a brilliant man and I found this talk really inspiring.

He talks about making time and space for creativity, which applies directly to me and my goals with this site of course, but it also applies to so many avenues of life, I’d like to add an ammendment to anyone viewing this to swap the word “creativity” with “_____ goals”.  It applies.  Whatever you want to achieve, you have to block in the time for it. Uninterrupted.  I remember telling my doctor once that I just didn’t have time for an exercise program. She rolled her eyes and told me that when she was in med school she still managed to find the time to run 5k, 5 times each week and if I couldn’t find 30 minutes, 3 times a week to do the barest minimum to keep my body healthy, then I was in need of a serious lifestyle adjustment and I needed to start asking for more help. She was absolutely right.

One of the things he says is that “To know how good you are at something requires exactly the same skills as it does to be good at that thing. Which means if you’re absolutely hopeless at something, you lack exactly the skills that you need to know that you’re absolutely hopeless at it.”

I love that.

So, enjoy the clip and make a point of blocking in some time for you and your goals this week.

November Already

Happy Guy Fawks Night! Nothing like celebrating with a burning effigy.

Obviously, we’re into November. As promised, I’m back to posting. (yippeee!)  Thanks to all for the super nice compliments and very flattering links. Particularly to Bree and Hello with Cheese. I really enjoyed SPX and it was mostly to do with the awesome folks we met there. Already looking forward to seeing y’all again in 2010! (see that? “Y’all”. I’m practicing my American.)

Speaking of cheese, I went ahead and posted the Halloween strip…and back-dated it. You’ll have to just go back one to see it.

As mentioned, the plan is to get back to regular posting, so there will be a Monday strip. (Very exciting!) Also I’ve been looking into my own diet and exercise maintenance (OK, reboot)  for the upcoming holidays, so November/December we will talk a lot about making time for our own wellness as well as  ideas about making sure we can all squeeze into that little black New Year’s Eve dress! I’ll pass on whatever I can dig up, see about getting some of my svelte friends to share their secrets and if you have a nugget that works for you that you’d like to share, drop me an email. I can’t speak for the whole Internet of course, but if you’re as sick as I am of magazines featuring gorge-worthy goodies and giant headlines, “Lose 20lbs by Festivus” only to find the recipes sponsored by the Fat n’ Fatter lard co. and an ad for liposuction…Well, I say it’s time to start building our own pool of reasonable, sensible, affordable, manageable resources and community with a bit of good humour to keep things interesting.

See you at the gym!

SPX and the Metric System

Got in from SPX at about 5 this morning.  It is one beautiful but LONG drive from Toronto to Bethesda and back. The miles/kilometers conversion really screwed me up and I almost had a heart attack when I saw the price of gas across the boarder, but as it turns out gallons and liters are completely different units and the price works out about the same.

Brian and I had a great time at the show, we’d definitely do that again.  Met some fantastic people, picked up some great new reading material, caught the Ignatz awards (very funny), I picked up the new Socks and Barney and got it signed. Very exciting for me, Steve Conley is easily the wittiest political cartoonist I’ve ever read and as it turns out a really nice guy.

SPX is a really different show from any I’ve been to before. No costumes or anime kids running around,  which was fine, it was nice to have longer conversations with people who were so into comics, but I have to admit I missed it. I guess the pageantry has really become part of the convention flavour for me…Although I will say, I did not miss the noise from the gaming sections. We were in Artist’s Alley at Fan Expo right near the gaming and it was fun for a while but by the end of the day it’s a bit much.

As I mentioned, we rolled in early after driving all night and I’m bagged, so I’m going to get a snack and head back to bed, see if I can be useful at work tomorrow.

Not So Fonda Monday!

Happy Monday!

All set to start a brand new shiny week?! Alive, alert, awake, enthusiastic?! (My friend Carolyn says that,  she’s very cheerful, I have yet to see that it helps.)

Big week coming up for Promises. I’m heading to SPX this weekend with Brian for the first time. I’ve actually prepped a little mini of strips to have on sale at the show. The plan is still to have a nice big volume ready for next year, but this is a good place to start, get some more attention to the site and all that good stuff…which reminds me, I still need to figure out how to install the analytics.  I did see on my Google Reader that my subscribers have doubled! Yep. I now have 4.  (Hi Mum!) Very exciting.

Speaking of books, my friend Leisl Adams of On The Edge has completed a really nice collection. Check it out if you haven’t been over there. Excellent work, congrats Leisl!

In other news, I got a very nice surprise in the mail on Friday. I had submitted a piece to the Darkstalkers Tribute book a while ago. When the winners list came out, my name wasn’t on it, win some lose some right? Well, I guess it was an oversight, because they sent me a copy of the book and I’m on page 226! I’m not above admitting, there was a little happy dancing. It’s a really nice book, in a lot of ways, I think it seriously upstaged it’s predecessor, the Streetfighter Tribute book, but I guess I’m a little biased there.

Have a great week! See you in Washington!

On a very special Promises Promises

First a big thanks to Dee for the inspiration in today’s strip. In keeping with the weekend’s “save the boobies” theme, I thought now would be a good time to mention the actual importance of keeping the girls properly supported, particularly when you’re exercising.

Aside from the obvious, and I don’t mean to be insensitive, but it really looks painful seeing some of you bouncing around on those treadmills, but improper support can lend to back pain and all kinds of badness as we get older. Sure, you’re twenty now, but do you really want to be thirty five and have to pick the girls up off the table and rest them on your knees to keep them out of the soup at dinner?

No, me neither.

My friend Frances recommends Moving Comfort brand sports bras. You can get them at places like Sport Check or the Running Room. They’re a little pricey but worth every penny.  Trust me, once you have one, you’ll never put yourself through another minute on a stair master in one of those cute, but ineffective La Senza numbers.
