week 12

Good start to the return of the Weekend Weigh-in!

Kind of a surprise too. I caught a cold and I was sure I was up at least 4lbs in my sinuses alone.

I don’t know why it never occurred to me til now, but I actually had a look at the nutritional information of the cold medicine I was taking and was shocked, SHOCKED to see how much sugar is in things like Nyquil and Neo Citran. (And they tell you to add more if you don’t like the taste!) So, I not only have to suffer through the snotties, I have to spend all of my treat-calories on cough syrup. (keyword – syrup, I don’t know why I never caught on before.) There are sugar-free options, but they’re loaded with artificial sweeteners that are so nasty, I’d rather take the hit for real sugar.

I guess it’s balanced by the loss of apatite. All I really want when I’m sick is vegetable soup, crackers and fruit.

The other unfortunate result of my disgusting condition is that I didn’t get to the gym as often as I would have liked. This weekend is the big Marathon of Hope I’ve been working up to! As I mentioned last week, I’m not exactly where I wanted to be fitness-wise by the time this came around, and it will most certainly have to be an interval run if I’m going to make it the full 10km. (20 minute run, 2 minute walk, 20 minute run etc.) But I’m still very excited about it and frankly, if Terry Fox could run 42km a day for six months in any weather across most of Canada on one leg with no ipod, I would have to be a total weenie to bail for a case of the sniffles.
